Mumbai Press Club strongly condemns the brutal murder of a young television journalist Santanu Bhowmik near Agartala in Tripura on Wednesday.

Santanu Bhowmik, 27, was allegedly killed by the members of the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT).

The murder of the journalist, who was working for a local television channel, occurred amid continuing clashes between supporters of the IPFT and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in the Khowai, Teliamura and Jirania subdivisions.

According to news reports, the journalist was attacked with sharp cutting weapons while covering a road blockade agitation of the IPFT.

We along with other media organisation demand an impartial and swift probe into the murder of a member of the Fourth Estate. The Club also demands that the Tripura government should ensure that the culprits are subjected to maximum punishment – be it the foot-soldiers or the masterminds.

We also express our solidarity and support to the Tripura Journalists in their protest against the murder.
