JURY ROUND OF THE REDINK AWARDS ENDS WITH THE SELECTION OF 32 AWARD WINNERS

Mumbai, 7 May:

The Jury process of the RedInk Awards was completed today with the selection of 32 award winners in the competitive and special categories. The selection of award winners was a gruelling process spanning 5 weeks which involved the setting up of 11 panels of jurists for each of the competitive categories.

This year with the additional category in the competitive section – ‘Women’s empowerment & Gender Equality’ – the number of entries from across print, broadcast and web platforms crossed the 1,600 mark. The maximum entries were in the ‘Women’s empowerment’, ‘Human Rights’ and ‘Environment’ categories.

The National RedInk Awards for Excellence in Journalism have been instituted by the Mumbai Press Club. They are an annual feature for the last 8 years. Winners of RedInk 2018 in the competitive round will be announced at the Awards event on Friday, 18 May, 2018 at the Jamshed Bhaba Theatre, NCPA, Nariman Point.

The detailed selection process began with the appointment of a senior, independent journalist or expert as a ‘curator’ for each of the competitive categories, to short-list and guide the panels of jurists. The list of curators included well known environmentalist Bittu Sehgal for ‘Environment’, Ayaz Memon for ‘Sports’, and former Economic Times Editor Kiron Kasbekar for ‘Business & Economy’.

After sorting and short-listing, a three-member jury for each category, along with the curator, assessed and debated the stories before deciding on the winners. Each of the curators and the juries were made up of distinguished persons with domain knowledge of the subject at hand. For instance the ‘Human Rights’ category included Press Council of Indian (PCI) chairman and former Supreme Court Judge C K Prasad; the crime category had former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, and advocate and lead government prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam; the Entertainment & Lifestyle’ category included actor Lillette Dubbey and entrepreneur Manmohan Shetty; the political section included Ajit Ranade, founder of Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Chief Economist of the Aditya Birla Group; and the ‘Business and Economy’ category had a stellar jury that included Arun Kumar, chairman & CEO, KPMG India and Murali Natarajan, MD & CEO of DCB Bank.

The complete list of jury for the judging process is attached herewith.
